Vigils for those killed by traffic violence
Since October 2021, whenever we've heard of someone killed by traffic violence, we have gone to that intersection to bring attention to these preventable deaths and demand that meaningful action be taken to prevent them in the future in accordance with Vision Zero - a program to bring an end to traffic violence. Unfortunately, the kinds of infrastructure changes needed to make people safe have not been carried out, and traffic violence continues to disproportionately affect marginalized people.
We need streets that are safe by design, and cannot rely on driver behavior, adherence to the law or law enforcement to keep our community safe.
In addition, Traffic Violence Rapid Response Team has started holding vigils in the East Bay.
Dates given are dates of the vigil.
Franklin and Union. March 14, 2024
After years of inaction and false promises from the city, we returned to one of our first vigil sites. We installed a one-block road diet that very effectively calmed traffic on Franklin. The road diet was removed by the city later that same day, returning Franklin to its dangerous three-lane configuration.
Earlier today, members of the community came out and installed a one-block road diet on Franklin Street between Green and Union in front of Sherman Elementary School. This is where Andrew Zieman was killed in 2021 and where the city has reneged on its promise to narrow the road. pic.twitter.com/K2tFOiDQ4b

The city wasted no time removing the safety infrastructure the community installed yesterday. Crews responded to remove the road diet in 2 hours, yet we’ve been waiting for more than 2 years since Andrew Zieman’s killing for SFMTA’s promised road diet. https://t.co/STGIvtfsUj pic.twitter.com/NKWm3UNwg5

16th and Potrero. May 25, 2023

16th and Valencia. January 20, 2023
On Friday, the community came out to 16th and Valencia to hold space, mourn the death of Wan Mei Tan and demand long-overdue street safety improvements in the Mission that prioritize people over speeding cars.

24th Ave & Santiago. October 31, 2022
Yesterday we went to 24th Ave & Santiago to hold space, talk to neighbors, and make safety improvements to the intersection. Santiago is designed to encourage speed, which led to a driver killing 何焕苏的离世 Huansu He last week. When will SFMTA start slowing cars down? pic.twitter.com/dKlbyDAHov

Lombard and Steiner. September 13, 2022
Last night, we held vigil at Lombard & Steiner for a pedestrian who was killed by a driver. This is the 21st traffic fatality this year on SFMTA's streets. London Breed's streets. These deaths are a direct result of the mayor's false promises about Vision Zero. pic.twitter.com/E7EX2Him00

Market and Danvers. September 7, 2022
Afterwards we hung signs at Market & Danvers where a motorcyclist was killed by a driver last month.

Upper Market is basically a freeway. Take 1 lane in each direction for BRT. Slow down dangerous drivers and improve bus service simultaneously.
That's how you reach Vision Zero pic.twitter.com/Kd9jof6ToB
16th St and South Van Ness. July 12, 2022
A hit-and-run during a high speed police chase.
Last week we gathered at 16th St & South Van Ness in the Mission, where on 6/21 a driver hit and killed our neighbor Rene Kelly, who was crossing the street.

SVN just received a road diet from 4 lanes to 3, but, while it was an improvement, it clearly wasn't enough. ? pic.twitter.com/92O3Ldfpy8
Eddy and Larkin. June 20, 2022
There have been at least 21 previous collisions at this intersection over the past 10 years, resulting in 2 previous deaths and 20 previous injuries.
Yesterday we were in the Tenderloin at Eddy and Larkin to protest the 17th person killed by a driver on San Francisco surface streets this year - a motorcyclist smashed by a truck on 6/9/22. Oh and today we’re already up to 19 dead.

3rd St and Mission, June 1st, 2022
Today we went to Mission & 3rd St to protest the deaths of two more victims of traffic violence in San Francisco. These preventable deaths happened because @sfmta_muni prioritizes I-80 traffic over human lives. We demand @jeffreytumlin & @LondonBreed make different choices. pic.twitter.com/tmMC7aJA1X

Fulton and 37th Ave, May 25, 2022
Organized by Richmond Family SF
Our 82 year old neighbor was killed by a driver on May 21. We met their family and vowed to push MTA and electeds to make physical changes to Fulton and adjacent streets' design.

Turk and Taylor. May 6, 2022
Another driver ran a red light.
Last night we came out to Turk and Taylor to stand vigil at the site of yet another traffic fatality: a scooter rider killed by a driver in a hit-and-run. This death was foreseeable and preventable. pic.twitter.com/YtVadfHwJN

Evans and Mendell. April 9th, 2022
A driver ran a red light. SFMTA recommended no changes to the street.
This morning, we came out to the corner of Evans Ave and Mendell St to stand vigil at the site of a traffic fatality, a scooter rider killed by a driver who couldn't follow the most basic rule of the street: red light means stop. pic.twitter.com/1hf1pM1ijM

Bayshore and Oakdale. March 22, 2022
We went to Bayshore and Oakdale where a motorcyclist was killed by a car driver on Sunday and implemented a guerilla road diet. Even at peak hours, removing a traffic lane did not cause any backups. Bayshore can be made safer immediately @sfmta_muni @jeffreytumlin @shamannwalton pic.twitter.com/sX23qU4CtN

Fillmore and Chestnut. March 17, 2022
84 year old pedestrian.
This morning we gathered at Fillmore & Chesnut in @SupStefani's district to protest yet another person killed by a driver. This dangerous intersection is in a school zone and crossing guards weren't enough to prevent the crash. @sfmta_muni must act to make this intersection safe. pic.twitter.com/uaZcd23HvY

22nd St and Harrison. March 4, 2022
We're at 22nd & Harrison protesting the death of yet another teacher on our streets. Heavy traffic, wide crossings, and drivers blowing stop signs create a dangerous intersection next to a school. We need raised crosswalks and concrete bulbouts to protect our community NOW pic.twitter.com/feJHpayV44

Abraham Joshua, 23 years old, a teacher.

Lincoln and 46th Ave. January 30, 2022
Hit and run. No recommended response from the SFMTA.
We went out to Lincoln/46th where somebody was killed by reckless driving last week and implemented a quick, safe, and effective road diet. Drivers slowed down without a fuss and everybody was safer for it. @sfmta_muni @jeffreytumlin you can do it too pic.twitter.com/PGFJpyVXpO
— Great Walkway Civil Disobedience Society (@SafeStreetRebel) February 4, 2022
Update: A stolen vehicle collided with an Uber making a left turn from Lincoln onto 46th Ave. The driver of the stolen vehicle fled on foot. The victims (driver & passenger) in the Uber were treated by SFFD. The passenger died from their injuries. An investigation is underway. https://t.co/vodg6bAdbH

Geary and Laguna. January 1, 2022
33 year old pedestrian.
We stood at Geary & Laguna tonight to protest yet another death from car culture. This is the obvious and inevitable outcome when we make Geary a car sewer instead of funding the bus & subway pic.twitter.com/eRMUguaA4A
